We\u2019ve all heard the old saying \u201cdifferent strokes for different folks.\u201d Some pet owners need athletic dogs that can tackle tough mountain hiking trails with them; and others want a charismatic terrier-type or intelligent Toy Poodles who zip around the house like they own the place. Others look for a steady companion with an easy-going demeanor, a zero-drama complex, and low-maintenance grooming needs. From gentle giants to little loungers, there are a variety of breeds that would rather snooze or slowly waddle by your side. Here is a list of the most mellow dog breeds that are dependable, even-tempered, and won\u2019t demand much of your busy life.<\/p>\n

Mellow Dog Breeds<\/h2>\n

Newfoundlands:<\/strong> Though these dogs were bred as working\/fishing companions, they enjoy limited exercise. Newfoundlands are fuzzy and bear-like, having the composure of one snuggled in a thick fur-coat. While this breed is not exactly the lap-dog sort, they are known for consistently low-key personalities that make Newfoundlands a family favorite.<\/p>\n

Basset Hounds:<\/strong> These long-eared loungers are great pets for small children and apartment dwellers, because of their minimal need for exercise. They are slow-moving, patient pups who are motivated by treats and affection from their owner, and the only grooming they need is a good brush every once in a while.<\/p>\n

Saint Bernard:<\/strong> Similar to Newfoundlands, the Saint Bernard is like a giant teddy bear suitable for children as well as a calm companion for other dogs. They love human affection, and are happy to romp around with kids, or curl up on the carpet for hours. They rarely bark, and make pleasant indoor pups, as long as they are taken out for a decent walk in the cool of the day.<\/p>\n

Great Danes: <\/strong>Despite being one of the largest dog breeds, Great Danes have moderately low energy, and are content to go on casual stroll with their owner, or rest on the rug at their feet. You might need to make extra room for him on the couch though, as Great Danes have no problem stretching their long limbs out!<\/p>\n

Greyhounds: <\/strong>These lithe beauties have been described as the ideal indoor pet. Though they are known for racing faster than lightning, Greyhounds were bred to crave heat and human companionship. They would rather cuddle near your lap than be running around in the yard.<\/p>\n

Bullmastiff:<\/strong> This breed can grow up to 200 pounds of mild-mannered hulky canine mass. However, both Bullmastiffs and Chow Chows (another quiet breed), have been known to get a little feisty and nippy when provoked. So long as you let this loyal lug have uninterrupted rest, you can count on an easy-going roommate.

English Bulldogs: <\/strong>The medium-sized breed has been a favorite choice for many generations. They require hardly any grooming, and prefer to avoid<\/em> strenuous exercise at all costs since their small noses leave them easily winded. Bulldogs work well with children and the elderly, and are happy to trot along by your side, and nuzzle your feet at the end of a long day. They are protective, loyal, and happy campers as long as they can stay close to their masters.

French Bulldogs: <\/strong>Perhaps one of the most charming canine is the French Bulldog. Their expressions and postures are sheer comedy, their short coats necessitate little grooming, and their little legs enjoy only brief spurts of exercise.\u00a0\u00a0 These snugglers are very popular indoor pets that love a good snooze, but be warned; their squat noses are prone to snoring<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Shih Tzus: <\/strong>This pampered breed can only be considered high maintenance if you regard reclining on a pillow all day as a taxing activity. These lovable lap dogs are devoted to their humans, living for affection and gloriously lazy hours as a couch potato. Be aware, Shih Tzus can be a bouncy and cheerful presence around the house, and they do need trips to the groomers. In spite of these facts, Shih Tzus are still considered easy going inside dwellers.
